There is a lot of kayaking, hiking, bear watching and of course fat-biking trips coming for the warm summer days and nights. Many international guests have visited us in winter but summer is not so well-known for people from other countries.<br />

Saunas, hundred of lakes and super green forests are waiting for people to come and feel the midnight sun! Actually a midnight sun is one of the oldest and most important attractions in Finland. First writings about Finnish Midnight sun are from 16th century. Then there was few first tourists coming to Lapland to wonder about this extraordinary and colorful nature spectacle.<br />

It is more than usual that we take our friends for a kayaking tour and same time to celebrate the midsummer festival with tens or hundreds of people gathered around the flaming midsummer fires. This is the Finnish way to celebrate summer and thank the nature for waking up and starting to grow new life from the ground. Welcome to Finnish summer!<br />

Pena is my dog, working as an important guiding assistant on our trips in Wild Taiga. As a birthday present for Pena we went to Saukkovaara Hill to have a short day trip and to try interesting Altai Hok skis in deep snow in -20 degrees weather.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Altai Hok skis are invented by two Canadian guys. The skiing tradition of Altai Mountains is thousands of years old and inspiration for Altai Skis. Nils and Francois, owners of the company, wanted to combine the qualities of skis and snowshoes.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Skis are wide and short, sliding quite easily on powder snow. Skins are laminated to the bottom of the skis and they are slowing down the speed on the slope, so these skis fits perfectly to my idea of slow adventures! </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-WgcysQrL9mBXcBnDaiLZZCtCJ8OVRbChSRySR1WWzg3mqqyFPP3l37YgE4d2eE_-N6CXzfQo7n5sppK04915xQnpjxApYJ6ibQJTo67M8O85wkNPHdPGVsWOtrMZ50eb5i0dIfiVVU6z/s1600/IMG_20180122_162907.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1208" data-original-width="1600" height="241" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-WgcysQrL9mBXcBnDaiLZZCtCJ8OVRbChSRySR1WWzg3mqqyFPP3l37YgE4d2eE_-N6CXzfQo7n5sppK04915xQnpjxApYJ6ibQJTo67M8O85wkNPHdPGVsWOtrMZ50eb5i0dIfiVVU6z/s320/IMG_20180122_162907.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div>
We had 145 cm Skis with Xtrace universal binding. Bindings are doing fine with normal hiking boots and enough ankle support. For longer and more demanding tours I recommend more robust bindings and skiing boots. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It was a bit short time today for making longer trip with Altai skis but this was enough to be sure that these skis are perfect to day trips at the Finnish forest and hill areas on one meter snow. Altai Skis floats very well on powder snow. Speed is a bit higher when sliding with these skis compared to snowshoes. Interesting pair of wood for our purposes!</div>

For all your senses. I have heard that there are many people who live in cities around the world, dreaming about a holiday in fresh, quiet and peaceful nature. We serve Northern Highlights to all our guests and for all of their senses.<br />
<br />
Several years ago, when I was a young student, I learned about learning, experiential learning. What I learned was that everyone needs own place and time, also on tour. We create a safe environment where everyone has the opportunity to experience their own adventure. You have enough time and space to feel yourself in nature...and learn from it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Many groups and individual travelers have had a short but rich time of their lifes with us, all with different backgrounds and expectations. A small taste of unexpected, dramatic views and new environment creates a pleasant sense of excitement. That is our leading star and main idea in Hikes’n Trails’ services.<br />
<br />
Positive experiences in Wild Nature, noticing your needs and taking care of your mental and physical health is our aim. Peace, amazing views, all the colors, light and darkness gives you new experiences in Northern countries. Giving an opportunity to see, feel and taste the nature gives us also the strength to continue the work we love, serving the guests.<br />

<br />
Feeling of safety in wilderness, warm hospitality in accommodations, friendly services and local and delicious food experiences are important to all guests. Magnificent mountain views in Swedish Lapland, feeling small when observing wild brown bear on the Russian border or sense of beauty during a paddling trip in Finnish summer in a remote island where the flowers bloom.<br />
<br />
White snow fields in Wild Taiga and seeing tracks of wolverine during the snowshoe trip in Eastern Finland are always a great experience. Fresh water from the pond and wild blueberries straight from the nature to the dinner table. The smell of a bog in early autumn. Northern Highlights are experiences for all your senses. Welcome to explore with Hikes’n Trails.<br />

Oulujärvi - The Sea of Kainuu<p dir="ltr">From forest to the Sea of Kainuu! Guiding in forests of Kylmäluoma hiking area is over for a while and it is time to rest at home, by the big lake. Oulujärvi - Kainuun Meri is ice covered now and waiting to get more thickness. Soon is time to go skiing, snowshoeing and fatbiking on this arctic element. It is more than possible that we get unexpected colours above the ice, to the clear and endless looking sky in near future. Northern lights will be spectacular on these wide white snow fields. Lets hope that the nature is on our side and gives more this magical light, which we already saw in Kylmäluoma with our Dutch guests! </p>

Trips were organized by our marketing organisation Wild Taiga. We, me, Pena-husky and photographer Lassi Rautiainen had guests from different countries around the world, most of them from another side of the globe, from Australia! Travel bloggers and journalists, professionals from travel agencies got a nice mix of winter activities and experiences of snow!<br />
<br />

After a biiig breakfast we started our second days program, snowshoe hiking trip, to Kylmäluoma hiking area and more into the wilderness. Weather was ok, maybe -5, a bit cloudy but nice for a long day walking. I was supposed to make a lunch in half way to Hukantupa wilderness cabin. I picked some vegetables, rice, spices and nice thick salmon fillet with me to my rucksack and let it roll! </div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
We started and had a few info and hydrating pauses during the trip to lunch place. Few wild animal prints were seen on the pristine snow cover and near the Kolkkojärvi wooden shelter we saw our first reindeer couple hiding behind the trees. I made lunch, salmon paella, and we continued after a meal to Hukantupa cabin. We heated up the original wood-heated sauna and were clean, refreshed and ready to our guests first christmas in Finland! </div>

Nice day for a little fat bike trip with my husky-Pena. Sun is still here but only couple of hours in a day. So these are the last moments to enjoy the light. After month it will be kaamos, polar-night. </div>

This time I wear first time my new Karrimor Phantom trousers. I bought them from UK web shop Sports Direct. Karrimor is quite old and traditional brand but in my opinion you can not buy them from Finland. But no worries, my order came quickly in three days from GB. </div>

<span lang="EN-US">Packing day
was yet another surprise as always. Where is it ... should I take this and
that, even if the packaging project has been the same for many times. Winter
and Swedish Lapland ski tours tend to always be a little risky for the weather
so the concentration of the packaging requires! Especially the food plan was
interesting because this time we had also a customer with us. Also this time Pena – my Husky dog was about to come with us and join this skiing tour so I
noticed a little bit requirement about the food also from him! In Lapland tour
we always have to take in concern that there may be one or two days winter storm
which have is needed to spend in a tent in freezing temperatures. This possible
situation increases the number of goods on the sled. The main idea was,
however, accommodation in the fell centers and well-equipped cabins, which are situated

We woke up after a silent night and peaceful sleep, had a nice breakfast which included Finnish bread, tea, coffee, yogurt, sausages, eggs and a vegetables, berries and fruits. Firstly when we yesterday arrived to Rajakartano, I served everyone a nice refreshing glass of homemade raspberry/blueberry juice as a welcoming toast. A rest of that tasted also very good in the morning. Thanks to Marika, my girlfriend for making that good juice!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We cleaned up the house, took our luggage and drove first to Hossa Visitor Center where we checked out the exhibition: "Mihin näillä selkosilla ennen uskottiin". </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The
exhibition presents people’s world view in the distant past. A world view is a
person's mental landscape, which explains the birth of the world and the
supernatural, the circle of life, happiness and suffering, the afterlife. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-US"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">The world view mixes up old and new religions. The undercurrent of the world of belief of the people in and around the Hossa area is the traditional northern belief in nature, the roots of which go back thousands of years. The exhibition talks about this belief in nature, the later folk religion and the conversion to Christianity. It also explains how our ancient religious tradition shines through in our own times.</span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
After checking out the exhibition we started our hiking day from the Lihapyörre parking place and took a direction to ancient rock paintings. The round tour is about 8 kilometers in variable terrain on the hills and on the dry land. The nature
and species of Hossa Hiking Area are typical of the Kainuu region and the
north. The vegetation and birds of the area have features of those of Lapland. (outdoors.fi/Natural

On the route I told about local features of the nature, soil and the landscape in Hossa and about the times after a last ice age and its effects to how Finland and its nature looks like today - about 10.000 years after. After a little while we came to Hossa Rock Paintings. We could get to see them very close from the platform on the lake. Everyone got a very good sight and pictures of paintings which were painted to the rock over a 400 years ago. The paint was probably a mixture of grease, ingredients from the soil, blood and egg yolk. </div>

There is a fireprlace near the rock paintings where I fried sausages and frankfurters by the open fire for people. We had also made some sandwiches with us fom the breakfast table. During the hike to cars, couple of us had also a little swimming break on the beautiful river!</div>

A half year ago I was contacted by a man from Israel. He wanted me to offer an active holiday in Finland for two families. In my opinion Hossa area, which was selected as a number one outdoor area in Finland in year 2011, was suitable for these two families. We had few convesations with email and skype and discussed about the details of the holiday. Everything went smoothly and customers accepted my offer, so I selected <a href="http://www.outdoors.fi/destinations/nationalhikingareas/hossa/Pages/Default.aspx" target="_blank">Hossa</a> as an action place and started to plan the 5 days holiday which was suppose to be the highlight during their two weeks being in Finland!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I wanted to serve them a nice package of action, peace, quietness, Finnish culture and local adventures with good food and tastes of the wild nature. So the menu included tent nights, accommodation in local cabins, fishing, hiking, picking up berries and mushrooms, rock climbing, swimming after sauna, making food together by the open fire, paddling with canoes, visiting reindeer farm and as the crown of all experiences watching and photographing wild bears near the Russian border.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
My customers came with their own cars from Southern Finland. Local reporter wanted to take some pictures and write a little column about my guests from far away so it took a little time posing in front of camera before we could leave Suomussalmi village and drive to north corner of the Suomussalmi muncipality. Before leaving we visited Suomussalmi tourist office, had a few maps and information about what we could expect in Hossa.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
First stop was at the Silent people. Quite interesting little place which is one of the most well known tourist attractions by the road 5 from Suomussalmi to Kuusamo. Good coffee, soft drinks and traditional finnish pancakes made by the open fire!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
After a short driving we arrived to Hossa and accommodated in Rajakartano, which is the old Border guardians house. Customers wanted to start fishing immediately so we took out the rods and started fishing, learned how to row the boat and paddle with canoes. Then we started to make dinner together. I had a salmon fillet with me so we made decision to smoke it by the open fire on the beach. That was quite an interesting way to make dinner and a new experience to my customers from Israel. After dinner it was time to warm up sauna and go to swim!</div>

I have tried to find out where are we actually going! Now I know that the paddling will be easy, quite long day trips without any bigger rapids. Although the River Kemi is the biggest river in Finland there is only few over rank 1 rapids. The main things are Lapland magnificent scenes, good friends and midnight sun!<br />

<br />
<br />
We will start our kayak trip from Kemihaara which is the small village near the Russian border. That is also the starting point to Suomi Meloo - paddling event which happens to start at the same place and in the same time. So, the big amount of paddlers will be gathering to Kemihaara. It is very nice because I know that there will be many friends from different parts of Finland in Kemihaara!<br />

<br />
The length of our trip is about 175 km and day trips will be between 20 to 40 kilometers. Stream will help us to keep good speed during the week. My kayak on this trip is Sea Bird Designs Expedition HV which have enough room to fit all the weeks equipment into the kayak. I will have tent, good sleeping bag and all food and gear which will be needed during the touring week in unpredictable weather conditions of Finnish Lapland.<br />

<span lang="EN-US">Hossa is
one of Finland’s best canoeing destinations. There are suitable routes for both
beginners and the more experienced, for trips from a couple of hours up to
several days of canoeing. The lakes are narrow and are therefore perfect for
canoeing. The rapids in the area are not very demanding. Depending on the water
level, they range from a classification of I to II+. The most demanding rapids,
the Lounatkoski Rapids along the Peranka Route, are not recommended for
canoeing. During dry times it is best to have plastic canoes as they are less
likely to be damaged by touching the bottom.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
